JAKARTA – Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of Ministry of Law and Human Rights (MoLHR) intends to encourage regional Geographical Indications potentials, such as from North Maluku Province and Gorontalo.
The issue comes up in the discussion between Director of Trademark and Geographical Indication, Nofli and Head of Regional Office of MoLHR of North Maluku Province, Husni Thamrin and Head of Legal Affairs Division of Gorontalo Province, Roberia, on 31 August 2020 at DGIP, Rasuna Said, South Jakarta.
“In our friendly meeting we are discussing about Geographical Indication potentials in North Maluku and any obstacles encountered by the Regional Office in order to encourage such potentials to obtain protection. For example Bido Coconut from Morotai, Bacan Stone and many more,” explained Nofli after the meeting with Head of North Maluku Regional Office.
In this opportunity, Husni Thamrin said that lack of concern and understanding from the Regional Government became the main challenge.
Accordingly, more extensive disseminations designated to Regional Government are required to facilitate and ensure Geographical Indication registration of North Maluku Province, to enhance and preserve Intellectual Property protection for Geographical Indications, Cultural Expressions, Traditional Knowledge, and Genetic Resources.
